The term,"Poetic Justice," is coined by Thomas Rymer in his Tragedies of the Last Age(1678).
It signifies the ideal judgement which rewards the good and punishes the vice at the close
of a literary work; it makes the tale end in a comedy. Its purpose is to inspire the good to
further goodness and discourage the wicked from evil, depite the obvious observation which
the real life dose not have such an ideal arrangement between the good and the evil. For
example, in Moliere's comic Tartuffe, the protagonist, Tartuffe, is a rogue and hypocrite
whose religiosity and asceticism are eventually unmasked. Poetic justice, in the end, is
revealed.
