Introduction to Research Methods
The purpose of the course is to make graduate students comfortable
doing the kind of research that will be required for success both
in the graduate program and in their professional lives later
on. We will briefly survey standard research materials and the
mechanics of proper documentation, but the course's primary emphasis
will be on detective work--techniques that will allow students
to put together materials in fresh ways, and to fashion stimulating
and innovative approaches to their subject of primary interest.
This course will not presume to legislate what critical methodologies
the students should adopt, but will teach students how good research
methods can enhance the specific modes of reading and interpretation
they are interested in. For students whose chosen critical methodologies
fit best under the rubric of poststructuralism (or some other
recent ism), strong emphasis will be placed on the continuing
importance of research. In a scholarly environment that has become
increasingly distrustful of the "metaphysics of presence"
and the validity of "scientific" data, good literary
research becomes doubly important, and can point the way toward
exciting approaches that could not have been envisioned without
the recent methodologies.
The course will be in large part a practicum: much of it will
be spent in the library, where students will be divided into teams
of two and assigned specific "cases" to investigate.
In addition, at the beginning of the course, each student will
be asked to formulate several research-related questions about
a literary work(s) of particular interest to him or her. Many
of the "cases" to be investigated will be based on student
questions, so that by the end of the semester, everyone in the
group will either have had the questions answered or have been
pointed in a direction that will allow him or her to find the
answers themselves. Perhaps most important of all, students will
be encouraged to allow themselves to "waste time" browsing
in the libraries--such seemingly fallow activity often leads to
tremendously interesting discoveries. Topics to be included in
addition to those mentioned above are the use of manuscript materials,
a brief introduction to printing history and the book as a material
object, the use of documentary materials. paleography, literary
forgery (especially Collier and Thomas Wise , whose forgeries
are available in ample numbers in the HRC), the use of computerized
bibliographies, and the special problems of research in non-traditional
fields. There will be frequent informal class presentations by
the teams of students and occasional brief writing assignments.
At the end of the semester, each student will submit a brief bibliography
of books and articles dealing with the questions he or she formulated
at the beginning of the course.
