Fall 1995

ҵ{ؼСGOne of the distinctions often made between graduate and undergraduate studies is the additional emphasis placed on research and systematic analysis during graduate work. By presenting methods of literary scholarship, information retrieval techniques, documentation practices, and issues of practical criticism, this course will enable you to do that research and to establish a standard of performance for graduate study in English. This course has a variety of objectives. By the end of the term you will be able to: 1) document the use of primary and secondary sources according to the MLA format; 2) locate, use, evaluate, and describe the standard reference works in English and related fields; 3) locate and use various indexes for finding articles published in professional periodicals; 4) undertake the necessary preliminary work for protracted study; 5) discuss literature and criticism orally and in writing, having learned to fuse your own ideas with those of others; 6) and write bibliographies, abstracts, and outlines. You will be familiar with the resources contained in an academic library (including our won at Fu Jen University) and will have developed your abilities to do literary research.

For this course we will do doing a great deal of "field" work in the Fu Jen University libraries as well as other libraries in the Taipei areas. You will frequently be expected to orally share the fruits of your research by giving brief presentations to your classmates. Participation in class discussions will be important throughout the term.

You will be required to do the following: annotated bibliographies (for oral report) of useful reference works; descriptive bibliographies (for oral report) of useful periodicals publishing scholarly and critical articles about English and American literature ; a groundwork bibliography for one of these three literary works: The Awakening, "The Waste Land," and The Importance of Being Earnest; two abstracts of critical sources; written responses to reading assignments; research outlines; oral presentations and critiques; and several brief studies.
